The Matthew R. Row Scholarship Foundation, Inc. gives educational scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each to high school seniors in the Western New York area who have lost a parent/guardian. Since 2016, we have distributed over $20,000 in scholarships. This year in 2019, we are thrilled to be able to give FIVE scholarships!! it is our goal to someday be able to give one to ALL of our applicants. Every year.
By partnering with Soaring Spirits International, we are pleased to offer our community with an in-person support group that meets twice a month for anyone who has lost the person they expected to spend the rest of their lives with, lead by Andrea R. Row. Our Foundation also gives two to four paid registrations per year (a value of $400 each) for Camp Widow®, another program of Soaring Spirits International. It is an inspirational, hope-filled weekend that brings widowed people together from around the world, offering many tools for navigating a new life without their person.
The Matthew R. Row Scholarship Foundation, Inc. was borne out of the loss of a very special man. Matt Row was a loving, intelligent, fun, driven man, and education was very important to him. The first in his family to attend college, he obtained his Associates Degree just after high school, and as his interests evolved, he continued his education again years later. After eight years of attending college part-time while working full-time, he graduated with his Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2007, about a week before his second child’s birth. Soon after, he secured a great position in his new field, and also began the pursuit of his Masters Degree. Part of his motivation to continue his education was to provide a positive example to his children, and provide more economically for his family.
On November 15, 2008, Matt was killed in an industrial accident at his engineering job at the age of 39, leaving behind his wife, Andrea, and their two young children. At the time of the accident, their son Jacob was four years old, and their daughter Sydney was 18 months.
Soon after the accident, Matt's co-workers, deeply saddened by his loss, organized an annual event in his honor called the Run For Row 5K to help fund a trust they set up for the children's education. In 2014, his widow became involved and together they founded a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation so that all the money raised is used to fund college scholarships for high school seniors from Western New York who, like Matt’s children, have also lost a parent/guardian. Since then, the Run for Row 5K operates under the umbrella of "The Matthew R. Row Scholarship Foundation, Inc.”
We are giving FIVE scholarships this year in the total amount of $12,500!!!
